Same Turkey-wide framework as Antalya: no dedicated retirement visa, so retirees use the renewable short-term (rental-based) ikamet via e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr, showing income (rough benchmark ~28,075 TRY/mo net min wage 2026) and Turkish health insurance. The catch is the same: short-term approvals have tightened sharply, and the address-based 'closed neighborhood' (kapalı mahalle) rule — permits refused where foreigners exceed 25% of a mahalle — bites hardest in the expat-dense areas (parts of Çalış, Ovacık, Hisarönü) where Brits cluster, so popular streets can be blocked. The dependable route is buying property at the USD 200,000+ threshold. Use a reputable local agent/lawyer and confirm your specific mahalle is open before signing a lease.

Healthcare. Adequate for a town this size, not a major medical hub. Private Lokman Hekim Esnaf Hospital is the main facility — 24/7 emergency, ~22 specialties, ICU/CCU/NICU, and multilingual service (English, German, French, Russian); it's the only Fethiye hospital authorized for medical-tourism activity. Özel Letoon Hospital is a second private option, plus a public state hospital that's cheap once you're SGK-enrolled. Routine and many specialist needs are covered locally and affordably, with English-speaking doctors in the private clinics. But for complex or rare tertiary care, expats typically travel — Antalya (~3-3.5h by road) or a flight to Istanbul — so serious conditions mean leaving town.
Climate. Mediterranean. Hot, dry, clear summers — July highs ~33°C/91°F with a long dry season May-Sept. Winters are mild by day (~14-15°C/57-59°F) but long, wet and sometimes chilly at night, with January the wettest month (annual rainfall ~833mm). Glorious Apr-Oct beach-and-boat weather; a genuine damp, quiet off-season the rest of the year — not year-round summer.
Safety. Fethiye is widely regarded as one of Turkey's safest, most relaxed expat towns — violent crime is rare and the long-running British community reports feeling very secure. Typical risks are petty: seasonal pickpocketing and bag-snatching in tourist-heavy Çalış and the marina, plus tourist scams (overpriced taxis/boat tours, inflated bills). Solo women generally feel comfortable, with the usual caution around late-night nightlife in Hisarönü/Ölüdeniz. As with all of Turkey, the country-level US State Dept Level 2 advisory (terrorism risk, distant Syria border) applies, though it has little bearing on day-to-day life on the Muğla coast.
US taxes abroad. Identical to the rest of Turkey: 183+ days makes you a tax resident taxed on worldwide income at 15%-40% (2026 brackets). The US-Turkey tax treaty (in force 1998) keeps US Social Security and government pensions taxable only by the US; private pensions/IRA-401(k) are less clear and may be taxable by Turkey as a resident. US citizens still file with the IRS (treaty saving clause) and use foreign tax credits to avoid double taxation. No totalization agreement. Don't assume retirement income is tax-free in Turkey — get cross-border tax advice.
