Placencia

Basic on the peninsula. Placencia has a public polyclinic (extended/urgent hours) and small private clinics for everyday and minor-emergency care; the nearest hospital is in Dangriga (~1hr north), and the better-equipped hospitals are in Belize City (~3hr drive or a short flight from Placencia's airstrip, PLJ), including private Belize Healthcare Partners and the public Karl Heusner referral hospital. Critically, there is NO world-class/tertiary hospital in Belize, so for serious or specialized care expats fly to Mérida (Mexico), Guatemala City, or the US, and air ambulance runs $15k-50k+. English-speaking, often foreign-trained doctors are common. Medicare doesn't apply — private insurance with evacuation coverage (~$150-350/mo) is essential.

Hot, humid Caribbean tropics year-round (highs upper-80s°F; humidity often near 90%, eased by sea breezes on the narrow peninsula). Drier, more pleasant season roughly Nov/Dec-May; a wet season June-November that overlaps Atlantic hurricane season. Belize sits squarely in the hurricane belt and low-lying Placencia has direct storm/surge exposure — direct hits are infrequent but the annual risk and evacuation reality are real.

Placencia itself is one of the calmer, more laid-back parts of Belize, with a harmonious local-and-expat village feel and crime that's mostly petty (theft, the occasional home break-in). The serious caveat is national: the US State Dept raised the WHOLE COUNTRY to Level 3 'Reconsider Travel' (reissued early 2026), and Belize has one of the region's highest homicide rates — but that violence is concentrated in Belize City's Southside (separately flagged), far from the peninsula. Police are under-resourced and prosecution rates low, so home security and self-reliance matter. Women generally report Placencia as comfortable with normal precautions. Day-to-day feels safe, but the Level 3 headline and burglary risk are honest trade-offs.

English is the OFFICIAL language of Belize — the single biggest draw versus Latin American alternatives, so there's zero language barrier for medical, legal, or daily life (Kriol and Spanish are also widely spoken). Placencia has a friendly, growing international community of retirees, part-timers, investors, and remote workers, with social groups, volunteer opportunities, festivals, and an easygoing local-and-expat rapport. It's a small, laid-back beach village, so the community is welcoming and easy to join but modest in absolute size compared with a big expat hub.

Genuinely close to the US. Belize City (BZE / Philip Goldson Intl) is ~2 hrs from Miami/Houston with year-round nonstops on United, American, Delta, and Southwest from Houston, Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, Newark, and others, and Belize is on US Central time. From BZE you reach Placencia via a ~15-min domestic hop to the Placencia airstrip (Tropic Air/Maya Island Air) or a ~3-3.5hr drive south. So it's an easy one-connection trip — among the more accessible Caribbean spots from the US, with that final short hop or drive added.

Belize is territorial and the QRP explicitly exempts foreign-source income, pensions, Social Security, capital gains, and inheritance from Belize tax — your US retirement income isn't taxed by Belize. The big caveat: there is NO US-Belize tax treaty and no Social Security totalization agreement, so US citizens still file and owe US tax on worldwide income with no treaty relief, and self-employed expats can face US self-employment tax with nothing to offset it. Lean on the FEIE/foreign tax credit (little Belize tax to credit). Confirm with a cross-border tax advisor.
