At a glance
English-speaking Caribbean close to home, with caveats you can't wave away
Picture a morning that starts in warm salt air. A golf cart rattles past, the reef is already blue, and the person handling your lease, doctor visit, or bank form speaks English. Belize feels easy before it feels complicated.
For American retirees the draw is rare: official English, a low-bar QRP retiree program, foreign pension income left alone locally, and flights that keep the U.S. close. The tension is just as real. Healthcare is thin, the country risk label is serious, and storms are part of coastal life.
And it isn't one answer. Ambergris Caye is the island classic. Placencia is the beach village. San Ignacio is the inland, lower-cost, jungle-and-town version. None of them has world-class healthcare on the doorstep.
Compare the cities
Comfortable couple budgets run about $2,400 in San Ignacio, $2,900 in Placencia, and $3,200 on Ambergris Caye; the coast costs more and still needs evacuation insurance.

Visa & residency
AS OF 2025–26Belize's Qualified Retired Persons program is one of the easiest retiree routes in the hemisphere. It is built around foreign income and light physical presence.
QRP can also allow duty-free import of household goods and a vehicle, boat, or light aircraft, but it is separate from the slower residency-to-citizenship track.
The regions at a glance
The right shortlist depends less on the country and more on the region — climate, altitude, flights, and the medical ceiling.
Ambergris Caye
San Pedro is the island version: reef access, golf-cart life, English everywhere, the highest cost of the three, and a flight to serious care.
Placencia
Placencia is the beach-village version: friendly, slower, coastal, and storm-exposed, with basic local clinics and Belize City or flights for major care.
Cayo
San Ignacio is inland and more affordable, with an active expat scene, jungle and ruins nearby, and less hurricane-surge risk than the coast.

Who Belize is right for — and who should look elsewhere
Fits you if
English is non-negotiable, U.S. access matters, your income clears the $2,000/month QRP bar, and you can self-insure for healthcare gaps and infrastructure friction.
Look elsewhere if
You need top hospitals nearby, you are risk-averse about a Level 2 label, you expect cheap imported comforts, you dislike hurricane planning, or you need polished public services.
