Easy to find English-speaking social groups, but Spanish bureaucracy (NIE, padrón, healthcare, taxes) is conducted in Spanish — a gestor is near-mandatory.
Málaga (AGP) is a major, modern airport. United runs a SEASONAL nonstop to Newark (~8 hrs, roughly summer only); year-round travel to the US is typically 1-stop via Madrid, Lisbon, or other European hubs (~11-15 hrs door-to-airport). Excellent intra-Europe and high-speed-rail connectivity (AVE to Madrid ~2.5 hrs).
Worldwide-income system: once a tax resident (183+ days, which NLV renewal forces), Spain taxes global income at progressive rates (~19-47%+, varies by region), levies a wealth tax on worldwide net assets (Andalusia currently rebates it toward 0%, but a national 'solidarity' surtax can hit large estates), and requires Modelo 720 reporting of foreign assets over €50k. A US-Spain tax treaty with foreign-tax-credit relief exists, but US Social Security treatment is contested — AEAT increasingly taxes it in Spain with a credit. US citizens still file with the IRS regardless. Get cross-border advice before moving.
