English-speaking doctors are easier to find privately, and the US consulate publishes a local clinics list. For the rarest cases, mainland Spain (Madrid, ~3h flight) offers the deepest specialist bench; acute care is well covered on-island.

Frequently called the best year-round climate on earth: average ~21C (70F), winter days ~18-22C, summer days ~25-31C, and very little seasonal swing — it rarely drops below ~14C or tops ~30C in the city. 3,000+ hours of sun a year and low rainfall. Caveats: the north coast around Las Palmas is cooler and cloudier than the south, the 'calima' (Saharan dust haze) can roll in occasionally, and trade winds keep it breezy.

The main issue is petty theft — pickpockets work the Las Canteras beach promenade, the historic Vegueta/Triana quarters, and crowded transit/cruise-port areas. Locals advise caution after ~22:00 around Parque Santa Catalina and the streets behind the cruise port, where rough sleeping and occasional bag-snatching are reported. Women report walking alone comfortably in the busy, well-lit central and beach areas. Spain's country-level US advisory is Level 2 (terrorism-driven), not a street-crime signal for the islands.

Las Palmas has one of Spain's largest, most active foreign communities, skewed toward remote workers and digital nomads but with retirees too — locals have served English-speaking tourists for decades, so day-to-day English goes a long way. Mature ecosystem: abundant coworking, regular meetups (e.g. the weekly Live It Up Las Palmas gathering), and urban-beach life around Las Canteras. The flip side: the scene skews younger and more transient than a classic 55+ retiree hub.

No nonstop US flights at all — the only long-haul from Las Palmas (LPA) is to Canada (seasonal Air Transat to Toronto/Montréal) and Africa. The realistic route home is a domestic hop to Madrid (~2h55m, very frequent and cheap on Iberia/Vueling/Ryanair) and then a transatlantic flight, or a connection via a European hub. Total door-to-door to the US East Coast is a long, two-leg day; the West Coast is longer still.
