Easy to find English-speaking services, expat groups, and clubs. Daily life still rewards Spanish, and Catalan is the co-official language (street signs, bureaucracy, schools), an extra layer most other Spanish cities lack.
Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) has ~60 daily nonstop flights to the US in peak season on American, United, Delta, and others, including JFK, Newark, Chicago, Los Angeles, and seasonal Miami. Flight time NYC ~8h, West Coast ~12h+. Excellent for Western Europe; transatlantic but very well connected for a non-capital.
Residents (183+ days) are taxed on WORLDWIDE income at progressive 19-47% rates. A US-Spain double-tax treaty exists (relief via foreign tax credits), but notably US Social Security is generally TAXABLE in Spain for residents, and Catalonia levies a wealth tax on worldwide assets above thresholds. The NLV bars work, and the Beckham regime does not apply to non-lucrative retirees. Tax drag is a genuine downside versus territorial-tax countries.
