Visa & residency for Americans
AS OF 2026Post-2024 reform, the entry-level Silver tier (age 50+, 5-yr renewable) requires ~RM5,000/mo (~$1,070) in offshore income PLUS a RM150,000 (~$32,000) fixed deposit parked in a Malaysian bank and RM150,000 in liquid assets; a property purchase/rental and local health insurance are also required. Income figure as of 2026. Couples: spouse can be added as a dependent without a separate deposit, but the income bar rises modestly. The large refundable-but-locked deposit, not the income test, is the real barrier vs. peer countries — hence the low ease rating. Penang state also runs a separate, cheaper "Silver Hair" / state retirement program worth checking.
