Hungary scrapped its self-sufficiency 'other purposes' permit — the old retiree route — in 2024, and as of mid-2026 has NO standard retirement visa (a replacement is discussed, not enacted). Non-EU retirees face two awkward fits: (1) the White Card digital-nomad permit, requiring ~EUR 3,000/mo NET (here ~$3,420) of remote-work income for the prior 6 months plus ~EUR 10,000 in the bank — but it does NOT allow family, does NOT lead to PR, and a pension may not qualify as remote 'gainful activity'; or (2) the Guest Investor 'Golden Visa', a 10-year renewable permit needing EUR 250,000 in an approved real-estate fund (or a EUR 1M donation), with no minimum stay. Either way: compliant insurance and apostilled documents. A real obstacle for a pension-funded couple — verify before committing.

Healthcare. Solid private tier in the city. FirstMed (near Széll Kálmán tér) is the established English-first clinic — all staff fluent, 7-day GP and 20+ specialties, direct billing with 110+ insurers; Rózsakert Medical Center (100 doctors, several US-trained) and Medicover (multiple clinics plus a hospital and advanced diagnostics) round out expat-friendly options, with Róbert Károly Private Hospital for inpatient work. Public hospitals are uneven, crowded, and far less English-friendly. Quality private care is affordable by US standards. Nearest top-tier care for the most complex cases is Vienna (~2.5h by road/train) or back to the US.
Climate. Temperate continental, four clear seasons. Summers are warm — averages ~21-23C with July/August heat waves topping 35C/95F. Winters are cold and often gray and foggy: monthly mean near freezing (Jan ~-1C/30F), some snow but rarely deep. Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant. Annual mean ~10C/50F. Expect cold, overcast stretches Dec-Feb — not a warm-winter destination.
Safety. Among Europe's safer capitals. US State Dept Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions, reconfirmed 2026). Numbeo Crime Index ~33-34 / Safety ~77 (2026). Violent crime against visitors is uncommon. The everyday risks are pickpocketing and bag-snatching in tourist zones and on public transport, plus a well-known cluster of scams: unlicensed 'freelance' taxis that overcharge, menu/bill 'switcheroos' in tourist-trap bars, and the classic consumption-trap where friendly strangers (often targeting solo men) run up a huge bar tab. Use Bolt/Uber or marked Főtaxi. Solo women generally report feeling at ease.
US taxes abroad. Hungary levies a flat 15% personal income tax, and pension income is generally exempt for residents — attractive on its face. The catch: the US terminated the US-Hungary tax treaty effective Jan 1, 2024, so treaty protections (residency tie-breakers, reduced/eliminated double taxation on pensions, dividends, interest) no longer apply. US retirees now lean on unilateral relief — the Foreign Tax Credit and Foreign Earned Income Exclusion — to avoid double taxation, and there is no totalization agreement. Net effect is more complexity and potential exposure than a treaty country. This is a material decision risk; get cross-border tax advice.
