Nafplio

Adequate locally, world-class only in Athens. Nafplio General Hospital (in-city) covers emergencies and routine care; the private Asklepieion hospital is ~20 min away in Argos, and English-speaking GPs now serve the area's foreigners. But Greece's public ESY system is chronically understaffed (some hospitals have postponed cancer surgeries; families often help nurse inpatients), and anything complex — cardiac surgery, oncology, major trauma — means Athens (~2h), where private hospitals Hygeia, Metropolitan, and IASO offer excellent, English-speaking care. Most expats register for AMKA/EOPYY once resident but also carry private insurance for speed.

Classic Mediterranean. Summers are hot and dry — July/August highs around 32-34°C with strong sun (heat, dehydration, and sunburn are the real risks). Winters are mild but wet: January daytime highs ~13°C, ~11 rainy days that month, and it can feel damp and chilly indoors, though hard frost is rare. Spring and autumn (April-May, September-October) are the sweet spot. Coastal, so the Argolic Gulf moderates extremes.

Exceptionally safe, even by Greek standards. Nafplio consistently ranks among Greece's most peaceful towns: violent crime against residents or visitors is very rare, and scams (a problem in parts of Athens) are uncommon here. The compact Old Town is comfortable to walk day or night, and women travelling or living alone generally report feeling safe. Usual small-town/tourist caveats apply — opportunistic pickpocketing in summer crowds, secure your valuables on the beach — but day-to-day this is the kind of place where people leave doors unlocked. Greece overall carries a US State Dept Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions) advisory, in effect since Oct 2025.

Small but welcoming and growing. Nafplio (full-time population ~25,000) draws a diverse mix of British, German, French, Italian, American, and Australian residents rather than one dominant bloc — no large anglo bubble. The community is tight-knit and supportive (informal networks for lawyers, real estate, doctors), and English is widely understood in town and among younger Greeks. But this is a working Greek town: you'll want functional Greek for daily life and bureaucracy.

No airport in or near Nafplio — the nearest is Athens (ATH), a ~2-hour (145-168 km) drive via the A7/A8, or a ~2.5-3h bus. From Athens, US connectivity is strong: nonstop ATH-New York/Newark on American, Delta, Emirates, United and Aegean (~10.5-11h, 25+ weekly in summer), plus seasonal nonstops elsewhere; West Coast trips connect. The catch is the double leg — every trip home starts with a 2h transfer to Athens.

Greece offers a flat 7% tax on ALL foreign-source income (including US pensions, IRA/401k, Social Security) for 15 years to new retiree tax residents who haven't been Greek tax-resident in 5 of the prior 6 years and come from a treaty country (the US qualifies). It's applied for annually (Jan 1-Mar 31 window) and paid as a lump sum. Crucially for Americans: the 7% regime does NOT eliminate US tax — US citizens are taxed on worldwide income regardless, and the US-Greece treaty plus foreign tax credits coordinate the two. Tax residency triggers at 183+ days. Get cross-border tax advice before relying on the 7% deal.
