Adequate for routine needs, with a real island gap for the serious stuff. The public General Hospital of Corfu 'Agia Eirini' provides 24/7 emergency care plus cardiology, orthopedics, surgery, internal medicine and labs; the private Corfu General Clinic 'Alexandros Mastoras' (~40+ doctors) is the main private option with an international-patients service. English-speaking doctors and pharmacies are findable. But for complex surgery, major trauma, cancer or specialist ICU, patients are commonly transferred to Athens (~1h flight) or home — island capacity is limited, the key honest caveat for older retirees. Most expats carry private insurance for speed and medevac comfort.

Mediterranean, but the green 'Emerald Isle' is one of Greece's wettest spots. Summers (Jun-Aug) are hot, sunny and dry (highs ~30C/86F, heatwaves to 40C/104F, ~67% humidity); winters are mild but genuinely rainy and stormy (~10-15C/50-59F, frequent downpours, lightning). Annual rainfall tops ~1,000mm (40in), peaking in Nov-Dec; July is nearly bone-dry. Expect lush scenery — and grey, wet winter stretches.

Very safe day-to-day. Corfu has a low overall crime rate — well below most European capitals — and a tight community feel; violent crime is rare and usually involves locals rather than visitors. The main risks are seasonal petty theft in tourist crowds (Spianada Square, the Old Town, beach areas in summer) and occasional break-ins at empty holiday villas in the off-season, so a year-round-occupied or well-secured home matters. Women alone generally report feeling comfortable, including at night in Corfu Town and the populated suburbs. Greece is US State Dept Level 1; the bigger seasonal hazard island-wide is summer wildfire risk.

English is unusually widely spoken for Greece thanks to centuries of British/Ionian ties and a tourism economy; daily life in English is realistic. Corfu has the largest expat community of any Greek island — roughly ~6,000 foreign residents (heavily British) among ~120,000 islanders — clustered around Corfu Town, Kontokali, Gouvia and northern Acharavi. The flip side: it skews seasonal and tourist-shaped, and the social scene thins noticeably in winter when many leave or hibernate.

No nonstop US service and many international routes are summer-only. Year-round, the reliable link is Corfu (CFU)-Athens (~7 flights/day, ~1h) on Aegean/Sky Express, then a transatlantic hop via Athens or a European hub. In summer there are direct flights to many UK/European cities; in winter those largely vanish. Realistically plan 16-20h+ door-to-door to the US, more off-season — among the harder spots here to reach quickly.

Corfu retirees can use Greece's flat 7% tax on ALL foreign-source income (pensions, dividends, withdrawals) for up to 15 years, if they become Greek tax residents (183+ days), weren't Greek-tax-resident in 5 of the prior 6 years, and relocate from a treaty country like the US; applications run Jan 1-Mar 31 for that year. Otherwise Greece taxes worldwide income progressively (9%-44%). US citizens still file in the US; the US-Greece tax treaty/foreign tax credits limit double taxation and a totalization agreement covers Social Security. Verify with a cross-border tax professional.
